The End is Nigh!

Unfortunately I had no internet the last week so my posts had to wait until this week. Not only did the idea of no internet have me feeling out of touch with the rest of the world (Ha! It must be the Y-Generation syndrome!) but it got me thinking if suddenly we had no electricity or anything and then that got me thinking about this whole 2012 end-of-the-world craziness.

The Story

So apparently on 21st December 2012, it is either a new age of enlightenment or the end of modern civilization, as we know it.

Scenario one: According to the various documentaries out there, scientists have stated that on 21st December, the sun will reach its peak in solar flares, which will eventually mess with our electric grid system and all that scientific mumbo-jumbo – and leave us with no electricity etc. Back to the Middle Ages then!

Scenario two: All the unpredictable and disastrous weather patterns we’ve been having around the world lately seem to have many thinking we’re heading for one epic flood capable of wiping out all mankind or in other instances, another ice age. (Thankfully we South Africans have nothing to worry about, we could do with a drastic temperature drop in this Summer heat!).

Scenario three: Judgement day is near! Of course, this scenario has always been used for every end-of-the-world we seem to survive. Remember the Doomsday preacher, Harold Camping, who predicted our end-days in May 2012? Then again in October and no, now he’s “really, really sure”, it’s December 2012. $80 million contributions to his organization must mean he knows what he’s talking about. Even though he’s been predicting the end of the world since 1994.

Translation

Some might be worrying for their lives and saying their prayers as we approach our final days. However, the South African cider company ‘Savanna Dry’ created an ingenious advertising campaign where the end of the world has to be experienced at the ‘The End is Nigh’ parties. What better way to celebrate the end of the world at the biggest party of the (last) year (of your life) sponsored by Savanna?

Last year, this event was hosted in Balito (KwaZulu Natal), with more than 5 000 showing up to the event. The success of this party has me wondering if there will be another one. Ironically, having an end of the world party twice just defeats the purpose, but hey, maybe 21st December really is  the end of the world.
